Grief

I thought I could bypass the heaviness
by setting it down,
wrapping it in a silk cloth and tucking it away
in a closet where it could remain unseen.
I did not know
that I had wrapped it in the silk of spiders
that would cling to me like a net
desperate to pry the life from my lungs.
I did not know
that I would still be picking this web from my skin
all these years later,
or that you would never return
to help me make sense of this mess.
I am a trapped insect
with nothing but time as my adversary.
